We are very pleased to announce that Specialized Services Group has been nominated by the Tampa Chamber of Commerce for the 2008 Small Business of the Year Award!

In 2007, Specialized was honored by being nominated and quickly moved to semi-finalist, landing as a Finalist.

The competition was fierce!  243 other companies!  We were very proud to walk away as Finalist.

The judges have repeatedly stated how impressed they are with our company, our team, its services and contributions and has nominated Specialized again.

We attribute this great privilege to our unwavering commitment to value, honesty and commitment under every circumstance.  As well as the desire to grow our people into outstanding leaders, not only within our company, but within our community.

We appreciate your partnership with Specialized and your input as we prepare for the submittal processes of this prestigious award.

1st Annual Field Appreciation Awards

Specialized Services Group held the First Annual Field Appreciation Awards on Saturday, March 15th.  This event was held to show appreciation to field employees and to recognize them for what they do for the company.

Marieli Bonilla and Daine Colon organized this event and created fun for everyone who came.

“The idea came up sometime in November,” said Daine.  “We wanted the employees to feel appreciated for their hard work.”

“We thought of it because we realized the office staff received a great deal of recognition during the end of the year awards given out at the Christmas dinner and felt the field employees needed something of their own to feel appreciated and part of the team,” said Marieli.

This event was such a success that Specialized plans to hold it each year.

“It was fun,” said Daine.  “We got a lot of participation from the field and I’m glad we got to do this for them.”

Handy Man Program Expands Through Souteast US

Specialized Property Services’ (SPS) Office Depot handy man program has successfully swept through Florida and will soon make its way through many other areas of the Southeast US.

The program consists of one monthly visit per Office Depot store to evaluate and repair different handy man issues that would usually need work orders.  Starting in January, SPS has brought this program to 138 stores in Florida and after only the first month of store inspection and handy man services performed in this region, this program has more than funded itself.

This program was started because of our relationship with our client and our consistent, dependable and excellent customer service.  Since we have, yet again, proven ourselves to be reliable, an additional 72 Office Depot stores will be added to this program on March 1st followed by the remainder of stores in Office Depot region 10 which consists of Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana and one store in Virginia being added in April.

The main focus of our repairs is plumbing and automatic door repairs with ten percent based on aesthetic repairs.

Many of the emergency and high priority work orders are being handled and repaired by SPS crews instead of outside vendors, which lower maintenance costs for Office Depot.

“Steve Lampasona is responsible for this program and is running the program exceptionally well with his past experience in Home Depot maintenance,” said SPS President, Dan Carney.

Specialized Completes Design/Build Project

Specialized Services Group (SSG) has created a world of opportunity in the completion of our very first design/build project in Georgia at the Home Depot Innovation Center.

Initially, SSG had prepared to begin in August and remodel the existing office, install a 400 foot receiving office, perform minor chain link fence repairs and be complete on Jan. 31.  The day we signed the contract, the plans had changed and we were asked if we could perform a major office package remodel, build a conference room that could hold 100 people with a sliding partition wall to divide the room in half and still be finished by Jan. 31.  These changes went from a minor remodel to a full blown design/build incorporating full architectural drawings and engineering, fire protection and a significant amount of code requirements.  To top it all off, due to the changes and permitting issues, the job could not start until Dec. 1. As you know, we’re Specialized which means, of course, we could do it.

In the existing office remodel, we removed the walls, remodeled the break room and removed and replaced ceramic tile, VCT and the existing carpet.  We, also, completely repainted all areas adding fire protection, security and electrical upgrades.  Adjacent to the existing office package, we built a brand new 88 x 34 square foot classroom/conference room built with multi-media as well as several chain link partitions in the warehouse and installed a new 400 square foot receiving office.

Once again, as usual, we have delivered an excellent product on time and on budget. “The finished product is excellent and everyone involved did a spectacular job,” said Sean Carney, CEO.

This project has already led to several more opportunities and we’re looking forward to doing more design/build projects in Georgia and Florida.

A Season of Giving - Specialized Gives Back

The Martucci Foundation

The Martucci Foundation all started four years ago when Dan Martucci’s wife asked him what he wanted for his birthday.  He told her that he had heard about a little girl who was suffering from Glioblastoma, a cancerous brain tumor.  All he wanted for his birthday that year was to invite several of his friends to his home for dinner and to tell them to bring their checkbooks to donate as much as they could afford hoping to help this little girl. Dan raised over $2,000 and every cent was donated to this girl’s family.

“It felt so good that we could help someone in such need,” said Dan. The same birthday dinner has been conducted for the past four years, each year helping another child in need.  The dinner has gotten bigger and better each year.

This past November more than 50 people attended Martucci’s birthday dinner coming from as far as Wisconsin.  $6,544 was raised to help a family that has two little girls, one is 2 ½ and the other is 9, that are both suffering from brain cancer.

“One thing that impressed me the most about this year was that three young ladies, Niki, Katie and Becca Carney, volunteered to attend and act as servers,” said Dan.

Dan Martucci plans to keep hosting this dinner each year and to “gather true friends who selfishly donate to such a great cause.”

The Guardian ad Litem Toy Drive

Sava Savov, SSG accountant, has coordinated a Christmas toy drive for abused, neglected and abandoned children in Hillsborough County through The Guardian ad Litem program.

“I would like to say thank you to everyone who got involved and participated in making a lot of kid’s dreams come true,” said Sava.

This is the first year SSG has supported this program bringing smiles to the faces of needy children and a holiday they will never forget.

“With the help of people like you and your company, our staff and volunteers will be able to provide gifts for these deserving children,” said Assistant Program Director for Guardian ad Litem, Suzanne Parker.

Metropolitan Ministries

Metropolitan Ministries faithfully reaches out to poor, hungry and homeless men, women and children in their time of need — providing life-changing answers. Within our care, people find food, clothing, shelter and other vital services.

But more importantly they find compassion and hope – hope for a brighter day and future. Over 15,000 families will seek assistance from Metropolitan Ministries this holiday season. Specialized is proud to contribute in this great organization by providing food drives. Since October of 2007 our team members have donated over 600 pounds of food for this great cause.

Randy McDaniel headed up the food drive for SSG, leading us to donate over 600 lbs of food for those in need this holiday season

Specialized Implements 'Ownership Thinking'

Specialized Services Group is creating a culture of employees that act like owners through OWNERSHIP THINKING.

Ownership Thinking was founded by Brad Hamm as a way to let all employees of a company participate in financial improvements. Brad has helped 700 companies implement this process. “Ownership Thinking is a way of doing business,” said Brad.

On Saturday, October 27, a mandatory company-wide meeting was held in Specialized University to begin this way of business. Brad led the meeting in English while his business partner and wife, Carmen, instructed employees in Spanish in another room.

In order to conduct business the Ownership Thinking way, every employee needs to be taught about business and a scoreboard must be built with measurable activities.  Ownership Thinking creates an environment of high visibility, accountability and learning throughout the entire company.

Through Ownership Thinking, the entire SSG team now has the opportunity to reap the benefits of the increased profits produced through continuous improvement and performance.

“Companies that do business this way retain employees by 200%,” said Brad.  Through this program everyone in the company will be able to think like an owner and help with financial improvements.

A Special Team Participates in a Special Event

Specialized Painting is always inspired when an occasion arises for us to give back to the community.  The Home Depot (THD) offered such an opportunity by asking us to volunteer labor forces for a local charitable event. We gladly and excitedly furnished painters and other associated equipment on Thursday July 12 to perform exterior painting on three portable buildings.

This worthwhile event occurred at Everyday Blessings in Thonotosassa, Florida which is a foster care home for approximately 35 delegated and abused children between the ages of newborn to pre-teen.  This non-profit home fosters children from all over Hillsborough County in a facility which has a nursery, preschool &
K-5 school on-site. It also has four "home units" with caregivers that live on site that care for 3-7 children apiece.

I am extremely grateful that several Tampa Bay Strategic Partners worked diligently together as a team on prepping and repainting the assigned buildings.  Our labor forces came from Specialized Property, Specialized Coatings and Marcos Painting who cheerfully strived all day in extreme heat to dodge the threat of rain and still deliver a quality professional project. Other volunteers from The Home Depot stores and Glidden worked on repainting the main concrete block building. Glidden furnished the paint and THD furnished the sundries.

We were also very pleased to get the extra attention and support from local THD Zone Services Managers, Angie Finch and Kenne Stoner.  They certainly kept us smiling and jumped in to assist wherever needed, whether it was delivering bottles of cold water, taking pictures or removing prep work and trash from our work areas.

Supporting Our Troops… Sergeant Robbie Leach

Specialized Services Group supports our troops.  This month we provided extra support to Sergeant Robbie Leach, the nephew of Operations Manager, Michael Toomer.

We sent him supplies, lip balm, toiletries and DVDs along with snacks, powdered drink mixes and games. We will be forever sending our thanks for his service.

SSG encourages you to let us know if you have a family member in the service so we can show our support.

Red Shirt Friday - Honor Our Troops

While most Americans spend their days at work or school and settle into a warm bed every night, the troops fighting for this country wake up and go to sleep knowing that their life is on the line.

Although these soldiers are fighting for the freedom of everyone in America, many do not receive the appreciation they deserve.  Americans who support the war used to be called the “silent majority,” according to Bluegrass Military Affairs Coalition.

Instead of remaining silent, Specialized Services Group (SSG) has adopted Red Fridays, a movement that supports the troops.  Every Friday, the office employees wear red shirts to signify their respect and support for the men and women who serve this country.

SSG also shows its support by involving itself in the Treats for Troops Foster-A-Soldier Program.  Through this program, SSG selected three soldiers to sponsor.  Jose is a member of the United States Army, Kelly is a member of the United States Air Force and Loy is also a member of the United States Air Force.

Through Treats for Troops, SSG has sent gifts such as phone calling cards, snacks and games and the gifts are received with much appreciation.
